Сюжетът разказва за група учени, които търсят източници на алтернативно гориво, след като всички ресурси на Земята са изчерпани. За целта те създават растения, които са кръстосани с човешки хромозоми и в резултат са получили собствено съзнание. Те се казват трифиди. След катаклизъм на планетата, почти цялото население ослепява, а растенията започват да правят опити да превземат Земята и да унищожат човешкия род до крак. Спасението е в неколцината незасегнати от бедствието, които трябва да се опитат да унищожат експеримента и последствията от него.
